Ready to make your own puzzle?
Here are some tips.

Purpose first, images second. What mathematical concept or idea are you hoping to highlight? Before selecting images, decide what connections you’re hoping students will make. Then find or create images that offer opportunities for students to make those connections.

Put yourself in your students’ shoes. Work through the puzzle yourself. Can you find more than one of each kind of connection? If you can’t, what revisions will make room for more connections?

Keep it simple. The purpose is for students to pay attention to what they’re noticing and look for what others are noticing. Give them something to analyze, not something to solve.

Stay curious and have fun! Students will surprise us with the connections they make that we didn’t see ourselves! Follow their curiosities, insights, and ways of thinking.
